Crossing the Gap to Heaven: The Ladder of Justification and Sanctification through Christ

The story of Jacob’s ladder in the Bible presents a powerful image: a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, bridging a vast gap. This ladder is more than a physical structure; it symbolizes the connection between humanity and God. In life, we often face gaps—spaces between where we are and where we want to be. At work, these gaps might be skills we lack or goals we have not yet reached. We cross those gaps through training, motivation, and support. Spiritually, the gap between us and God is crossed through the gospel of Jesus Christ, which offers a ladder of grace, justification, and sanctification.

Understanding the Gap Between Us and God

Life’s challenges often create a sense of distance or separation. Spiritually, this distance is the gap between our fallen nature and the holiness of God. The Doctrine and Covenants section 20 teaches that justification through the grace of Jesus Christ is just and true. Justification means being lifted out of sin, freed from the pit of our mistakes and weaknesses. It is the first step in crossing the gap to God.

But justification alone does not complete the journey. The same section continues, saying, sanctification through the grace of Jesus Christ is just and true to all those who love and serve God with all their hearts, minds, and strength. Sanctification is the process of becoming holy, made possible through the Holy Ghost. It fills the rest of the gap, transforming us from justified sinners into sanctified followers.

The Ladder of Justification and Sanctification

Imagine the ladder as a bridge spanning the gap between earth and heaven. The bottom rungs represent baptism and justification. When we are baptized, we enter a new relationship with Christ. This relationship allows us to access His grace, like drawing from a bank account. Justification lifts us out of sin and into new life.

The higher rungs represent sanctification, which comes through the Holy Ghost. Sanctification is ongoing. Each week, through the sacrament, we renew our justification. If we live in ways that invite the Spirit—through prayer, scripture study, service, and obedience—we climb higher on the ladder, becoming more like Christ.

If we choose actions that distance us from the Spirit, we risk falling into despair or addiction, bound by negative influences. The ladder is a merciful, lifelong way to cross the gap, but it requires effort and faithfulness.

Sacrifices Along the Ladder

Crossing any gap requires sacrifice. At work, we sacrifice time and comfort to gain skills. Spiritually, sacrifices might include giving up harmful habits, pride, or selfish desires. These sacrifices are not losses but investments in our spiritual growth.

The gospel teaches that sacrifices made in faith bring blessings. They open the way for the Holy Ghost to sanctify us. Sacrifice is part of the climb, helping us leave behind what holds us back and move closer to God.

Applying the Ladder to Life’s Gaps

The ladder metaphor extends beyond the spiritual gap. In daily life, we face gaps between where we are and where we want to be—whether in career, relationships, or personal growth. Crossing these gaps requires:

  • Training: Learning new skills or knowledge.

  • Motivation: Staying focused on goals despite challenges.

  • Support: Receiving encouragement and help from others.

Similarly, the spiritual ladder requires training (learning the gospel), motivation (faith and hope), and support (church community and prayer). Both journeys depend on steady progress and commitment.

The Role of Hypnosis in Crossing Gaps

Hypnosis can be a useful tool to help cross personal gaps, especially those related to habits, fears, or motivation. By accessing the subconscious mind, hypnosis can reinforce positive beliefs and behaviors, making it easier to climb personal ladders.

For example, someone struggling with addiction might use hypnosis to strengthen their resolve and reduce cravings. This complements the spiritual ladder by supporting sanctification and healing from within.

Pressing Forward with Faith

Nephi’s counsel captures the heart of this journey: “Press forward with a steadfastness in Jesus Christ, feasting upon his words, with a love of God and of all men, trusting fully in the merits of Christ to save.” This means continuing to climb the ladder, step by step, trusting Christ’s grace to justify and sanctify.

Each rung climbed is a victory over the gap, a movement closer to heaven. The ladder is not a quick fix but a lifelong path of growth, sacrifice, and grace.
